Frank Thayer, PhD – Professor Emeritus
Dr. Thayer is a New Mexico native whose three degrees are all from New Mexico State University. He has worked as a reporter-photographer, newspaper editor, as an advertising copy writing and public relations writer. The major part of his career has been in journalism education, with 11 years in Canada and over 21 years at NMSU. He has published three journalism textbooks, and his teaching concentration is in news writing, editing, public opinion and propaganda.

Pam Porter – College Assistant Instructor
Pamela Porter, college assistant professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications, remains a working journalist who regularly contributes to regional and national publications and has already traveled a great many of the back roads of New Mexico while unearthing information for freelance stories and gathering images for the books, “Houses in Time,” a study of New Mexico’s history through its architecture, and “Ghost Towns Alive,” which visits 70 haunting locations. Porter has been a newspaper reporter and shooter, PBS and Folklife Festival publicist, and contributor to magazines including Sunset, New Mexico Magazine, Preservation, Southwest Art, New Mexico Journey and Natural History. Hired as a working professional by former department heads and mentors, Steve Pasternack and Frank Thayer, Porter has taught a number of writing, photography and multimedia courses; she offers up-to-date guidance, media contacts and references to students eager to be published. She’s currently teaching news/feature writing and media design. This professor is co-adviser for the department’s Photojournalism Club and accompanies students on shooting trips, photography lectures and exhibitions each semester.

Chris Faivre – College Instructor
Born in New York, raised in Albuquerque but a resident of Las Cruces for over 20 years, Chris Faivre has a developed a passion for Las Cruces and has spent the last decade promoting it to the world. As a graduate of New Mexico State University with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communications, Chris has spent the last 10 years as the Media/Publications Manager for the Las Cruces Convention & Visitors Bureau. During that time, he has worked with travel writers from around the world to generate over $2 million in free media exposure for Las Cruces as a leisure and meetings destination. Chris has over seen the branding efforts of the bureau including the coordinating of the CVB advertising and marketing efforts. Chris has also worked extensively in establishing the bureau’s network of websites which receives over 300,000 visits per year. In addition to his work at the CVB, he servers as a part-time Journalism instructor at NMSU. Chris is a member of the Society of American Travel Writers and the Public Relations Society of America as well as a board member of the White Sands International Film Festival. He is married and has to two young boys.
