Photojournalism

Luis Jimenez' Los Lagartos sculpture , El Paso - July 2011

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication offers a full sequence of photojournalism courses, including Intro to Photography, Photojournalism and Documentary Photojournalism. We incorporate the tools and concepts of multimedia journalism in all advanced photography courses, utilizing still photography, writing, slideshows and video. . Our students are fully integrated into the new world of Web journalism as well as traditional media. Students post photographs and stories to their class' web site: http://www.nmsu.documentaryshooters.com .

Additionally, students are required to submit their work to out-of-class publications to learn the culture of journalism and the business of mass communication. In this way, students learn their position in visual journalism and how their visual story-telling skills integrate into the world of contemporary publishing.

We emphasize strong graphic skills as well as strong story-telling skills, encouraging students to report on their world and, as they gain confidence, the world at large. Our program is driven by the idea that images and words are natural allies and to use them both with a high degree of precision and skill is a process that requires learning the Language of Vision, and that using this language well enhances any publication's intention of clear and readable communication about news and ideas that matter to consumers of journalism.
