Prospective Students

The NMSU Department of Journalism and Mass Communication offers bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communication. The department administers a variety of professional development.

Through a revamped curriculum, students learn the skills they need to succeed in the new media environment, whether they pursue careers in journalism, advertising, public relations, broadcasting, photography or multi-media interface fields. For this, the department offers specializations in editing and graphic design, electronic communication (television and radio broadcasting), multimedia, photojournalism, reporting, advertising, public relations and strategic communication.

Major: Journalism and Mass Communications

 

Students are required to complete a 13-hour cores courses (students, who have ACT English score below 25 or SAT below 570) or 12-hour core courses (students who have ACT English score above 25 or SAT above 570), and then complete an additional 30 hours of courses in the department, bringing the allowable maximum to 43 hours. Students must complete at least 88 hours of courses outside the department, and must have at least 65 hours of credits in the liberal arts and sciences. Students are required to fulfill a Second language. Refer to the Arts & Sciences College Degree Requirements for specifics.

            Five core courses (JOUR 102, 105G, 110, 210, and 493) are required to students who don't meet department's English requirements. Those who have ACT English below 25 and SAT below 570 must take JOUR102 before they take 110.

            Four core courses (JOUR 105G, 110, 210, and 493) are required to students who meet department's English requirements.

 

Advanced Requirements

            Students must complete 30 hours of non-core courses, including at least one course from each category listed below. Entry into course is subject to successful completion of appropriate prerequisites.
