The NMSU Department of Journalism and Media Studies offers coursework in a variety of professional disciplines. Areas of emphasis include advertising, broadcasting, news-editorial, photojournalism and public relations/strategic communications.

For over 10 years the advertising emphasis at NMSU has prepared students for careers in the advertising field through completion of rigorous coursework and by offering students the opportunity to apply their skills at the National Student Advertising Competition. The competition gives students the chance to create comprehensive campaigns in accordance with industry standards. In previous years, students have had the opportunity to create and present campaigns to a variety of companies including Coca-Cola, Bank of America and Toyota. Our graduates are currently working in the advertising field for major companies including Ford, Comcast and Leo Burnett.
Broadcast journalism is an exciting and unique area of emphasis here at NMSU that prepares students for careers as television news reporters and producers. A live television news program on the university’s public television station is an integral part of our broadcast journalism experience. Students learn both theory and practice of broadcast media. The focus is on both reporting and media production.
Utilizing in-house public television and radio station facilities, our students get to learn in a real-world setting with state-of-the-art equipment. Students may elect to complete the entire sequence of broadcasting classes, or only some of the courses. These courses emphasize television journalism, video production and on-air performance.
In addition to our live student television newscast, News22, many of our students gain real-world experience working for AggieVision and/or interning at many off-campus stations and other companies. Students also produce news segments in Spanish for Noticias 22.
Graduates of our broadcasting program have had successful careers at television and radio stations across the nation.
The news-editorial emphasis prepares students for careers as writers, reporters and editors. Print and online news media are still some of the most important sources of information in our society. Many of our graduates will begin their careers in newspapers, magazines and related media jobs.
At NMSU, all journalism students learn basic news writing skills and will have the opportunity to gain advanced experience in news reporting and publishing for both print and online journals. Courses in news editing, print media design and multimedia round out preparation for careers in print and online news media.
In addition to working for Kokopelli, the journalism department’s own online news publication, students with an interest in news-editorial careers also produce an issue of the The Scoop print magazine every year.
Finally, many of our students complete internships at commercial newspapers and magazines before they graduate, which provide additional hands-on experience that leads to greater success after graduation.
The Department of Journalism and Media Studies offers a full sequence of photojournalism courses that incorporate the tools and concepts of visual journalism by utilizing still photography, writing, slideshows and video.
We emphasize visual literacy as well as strong technical and storytelling skills. We encourage students to report on their communities and, as they gain confidence, the world at large.
Our program is driven by the idea that images and words are natural allies and to use them both with a high degree of precision and skill is a process that requires learning the language of vision. Using this language well enhances any publication’s goal of providing clear, readable and relevant news and information.
Public Relations/Strategic Communications
The NMSU Department of Journalism and Media Studies prepares students for careers in public relations by offering specific coursework in writing, editing, reporting, photography, broadcasting, technology convergence, research and applied internships. This coursework includes hands-on public relations campaign-building projects, as well as specialized courses in public relations theory and sports promotion. Many of our graduates go on to work as communication specialists including digital media specialists and other PR practitioners in a variety of professional settings both public and private.
