Scholarships

Academic Year 2023-2024 Journalism Scholarships Available to Students

 

In order to be awarded a departmental scholarship, students must do the following:

  1. Must have applied for Scholar Dollar$.
  2. Must be enrolled full-time during the current school year.
  3. Must be a declared Journalism and Media Studies major.


Additional criteria for each individual scholarship are listed below.

 

Ann and Jim Ballard Endowed Scholarship

Must have at least 62 credits completed (junior or senior classification).

Area of emphasis must be in photojournalism.

 

Batkin Broadcasting Current Use Scholarship

Must be enrolled full-time (15+ credits).

Preference given to students interested in creating new radio programming.

 

James T. Cloyd Memorial Scholarship 

Must have at least 62 credits completed (junior or senior classification).

Area of emphasis must be in print journalism / editorial or visual communication.

Preference given to students with financial need.

 

Cress Excellence in Journalism Current Use Scholarship

Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.

Must demonstrate journalism aptitude via work experience.

Preference will be given to students whose legal state of residence is New Mexico.

Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need as determined by FAFSA results.

 

Sam Donaldson Endowed Scholarship

Must have at least 62 credits completed (junior or senior classification).

Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.

Preference given to students participating in News22 program.

 

Charles L. Eberhardt Memorial Scholarship

Must have less than 70 credits completed.

Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Based solely on academic or professional merit.

 

Barbara Funkhouser Endowed Scholarship

 

Jim and Sandy Hughes and Dr. G. N. ‘Doc’ Stroman Endowed Scholarship

 

Keith Green Memorial Community Journalism Current Use Scholarship

Must earn a paid summer newspaper reporting internship with a New Mexico community newspaper.

Must live in the New Mexico town where the community newspaper is located during the summer week paid internship period.

Must be in good academic standing.

Must be a U.S. citizen.

Funds must be used for summer housing assistance.

 

Tamara E. Koch Scholarship

Preference given to non-native English speaker from a European country

–or–

If English is native language, then cumulative GPA must be 4.0.

 

Manatt Journalism Endowed Scholarship

Students who demonstrate the potential for leadership and career success.

Preference given to students from Chaves, Lea, Eddy Lincoln and Otero counties.

 

McCleneghan Endowed Scholarship

Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.

Must be a classified as a junior (62-93 credits).

Must have passed the following journalism courses:

Jour 105G

Jour 110

Jour 210

Jour 489

 

New Mexico Press Association Scholarship

Student must have worked for a New Mexico newspaper during the summer prior to receiving the scholarship.

 

News22 Student Scholarship 

 

Barbara K. Page Journalism Scholarship

Preference given to:

Students on staff at student newspaper/publication.

Area of emphasis must be in print journalism/editorial/newswriting.

Commitment and passion evident through newsroom experience.

 

Steven R. Pasternack Endowed Scholarship

Must be a resident of New Mexico or New York.

Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Preference given to a student whose interest lies in improving the lives of people living in Africa, Eastern Europe or Southeast Asia.

 

Daniel R. Perry Endowed Scholarship for Journalism & Mass Communications

Must be a enrolled full time (15+ credits).

Must have completed at least 30 credit hours.

Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.

Preference given to those whose area of emphasis is in print journalism / news editorial.

 

Guy Phillips Media Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to students who will pursue excellence in radio, television, publishing or social media.

Awards given to one or more undergraduate students.

Must have a declared major in journalism and media studies.

Must demonstrate financial need as determined by official FAFSA.

Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.

Scholarship committee in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies shall select award recipients.

Scholarship is renewable as long as the above criteria are met.

 

Sophomore Scholarship

Must be classified as a sophomore ( 28-61 credits ).

Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
