COVID-19 Important Information and Resources
In light of the current spread of COVID-19, the Department of Journalism and Media Studies has taken measures to comply with state mandates from the New Mexico Department of Health and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, as well as NMSU systemwide guidance and directives.
This page provides information on how the J&MS department will handle operations during this unprecedented time, as well as provide students with needed guidance and resources moving forward.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
- J&MS classes have moved online as of March 20, 2020.
- Face-to-face class meetings resumed in August 2021.
- Milton Hall remains closed and locked, as do our labs.
- Milton Hall and J&MS labs are open as of August 2021.
- All students and faculty attending face-to-face classroom and lab meetings during the fall 2021 semester are required to wear face masks at all times while inside Milton Hall or any other NMSU campus building in accordance with NMDOH statewide public health mandates.
- All J&MS faculty and staff are working from home for now, in accordance with state and NMSU campus health mandates.
- All J&MS department faculty and staff are back on campus as of August 2021.
- All work requiring use of J&MS equipment is postponed until we can return to face-to-face teaching.
- All coursework requiring J&MS equipment use has resumed as of August 2021, and all or most J&MS equipment is available for checkout. If you are concerned about equipment and/or internet access in order to complete required coursework, contact Ms. Barbara Franco via the contact information below.
- NMSU has a dedicated webpage offering COVID-19 guidance and resources.
- Many professors may still be using Zoom to facilitate online teaching and advising. Please visit NMSU’s Academic Technology Zoom support page to get Zoom set up on your device(s).

- Ensure you can log into Canvas. Log in at http://my.nmsu.edu and click on learn.nmsu.edu (Canvas).

- Test your bandwidth at speedtest.checs.net. Minimum upload and download speed requirements for Zoom conferencing are 2.0 Mbps.
- Download free software from the NMSU ICT Freeware site.
- Install Microsoft Office. This software is available for download at NMSU Student Technology and may be installed for free on up to five personal devices.
